On 8 December 2025, the European Commission (DG ENER B4) will host in Brussels a high-level workshop dedicated to advancing the development of a European AI Foundation Model for Energy Grids.
The event will bring together TSOs, DSOs, research organisations, AI Factories, and representatives of the TEF initiative to define high-impact “quick-win” use cases, explore data- and model-sharing strategies, and shape the Coalition of the Willing that will guide the next steps of this strategic European effort.
The workshop will feature Elissaios Sarmas from NTUA, one of DEDALUS’s key strategic partners. He will serve as a panelist in the Keynote Session – “Plan 4 EU AI – Keynote Inputs: State of Play” and as a co-moderator in the Interactive Session 2 – “Data and Model Sharing Strategy.”
Below is a concise description of these two sessions.
The Keynote Session will set the technical and strategic foundation for the workshop by outlining the current landscape of initiatives contributing to the development of a European AI foundation model for energy grids. Through a sequence of concise expert inputs, including one of Elissaios Sarmas, the session will provide a shared baseline on the opportunities, challenges, and ongoing activities that underpin this effort.
In this interactive session, Elissaios Sarmas (NTUA) will serve as co-moderator, helping to guide the discussion on defining a European framework for data and model sharing in the field of AI. His contribution will support the exchange of perspectives among grid operators, researchers, and technology developers, with the aim of identifying practical governance principles and interoperable approaches that can enable trustworthy and scalable AI development across the energy sector.
